Stormwater Awareness Week 2017

The Soil & Water Connection: Using compost as part of the toolbox for BMP design

Compost BMP (Best Management Practices) are used to improve water quality by increasing the amount of water that can infiltrate into the soil, creating barriers that slow the water from flowing too quickly, filtering negative constituents, and blanketing the soil to reduce erosion.  Healthy soil with organic matter enhances water and nutrient holding capacity while improving soil structure.  Increasing soil organic matter levels by using compost can increase porosity and the infiltration of water into the soil and assists in stormwater management.
